Dettori reaches landmark to cap great weekend

Report: Italy, Sunday

Capannelle: Premio Roma GBI Racing (Group 1) 3yo+, 1m2f

FRANKIE DETTORI make it a weekend to remember when he followed up his Saturday night Breeders` Cup heroics with victory in the final Group 1 of the European Flat season on Rio De La Plata, who gave the jockey his 100th top level success for Godolphin in the process.

Dettori hot-footed it from Kentucky, where he rode Dangerous Midge to Turf success, to partner the five-year-old, last seen landing the Premio Vittorio at San Siro to put Dettori on the brink of his century, in a quality running of the 1m2f contest.

With the field spread across the track at the three-furlong pole plenty were in contention, but Dettori was travelling onimously well on the two-time Group 1 winner despite Voila Ici scooting around three lengths clear two furlongs out.

A number of runners were under the cosh at this stage, including leading fancy Clowance, who wilted under pressure for jockey Jimmy Fortune to finish tenth, one place in front of Godolphin`s Flying Cloud, who was retired after the race.

All the time, Dettori was ready to pounce and Rio De La Plata, previously unproven at this trip and more at home on faster ground, laid down his challenge to last year`s winner Voila Ici, asserting his authority impressively at the furlong pole to run away with the spoils for trainer Saeed Bin Suroor.

Striking greyVoila Ici posted a gutsy display in second, while Estejo and Zazou finished strongest of the also-rans in third and fourth.

However, it was a jet-lagged Dettori who stole the show yet again, reaching his landmark century on his 547th Group 1 ride for Godolphin and celebrating in customary fashion.

His first Group 1 victory for the international stable came aboard Balanchine in the 1994 Oaks.

Diana Cooper, representing Godolphin, said: "It was fantastic for Frankie to get his 100th Group 1 winner for Godolphin in such emphatic style today. Everyone at Godolphin is delighted - it is a tremendous achievement.

"That was a fabulous performance from Rio De La Plata today and the horse really is going from strength to strength at the moment. The horse travelled supremely well and nothing was ever going to beathim today."

Cooper added: "Flying Cloud gave Godolphin a fabulous day when winning the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2009. She will now be retired."
